Read the full review at iLive, iLaugh, iLove Books. I ended up enjoying this book a lot more than I expected, despite its mediocre ratings. Yes, it was cliche. Dark, alluring boy? Check. Dangerous boy warns girl to avoid him because he's a monster? Check. Boy tries to avoid girl but falls in love with her? Check. Sound familiar? *coughTwilightcough* And yet, I liked the book. There are those people who hate cliches and and avoid them like the plague, no matter how good the writing is if it just doesn't seem original. And then there are those that just don't care. And I'm the latter. And if you are like me, then you may enjoy this novel, too. Besides, even if you do purchase it, at least it will look good on your bookshelf. *Note: I am not necessarily categorizing you into one group. There is no problem with being a blend, like a Type-Z person. The beginning of the book is one word: strange. I even have it underlined in my notes. It's creepy and grotesque, featuring dreams of fancy balls with skeletal and disfigured creatures. And a mysterious, handsome boy who is everything that Theia could've dreamed of. (Literally.) I liked Theia as a character. As a female protagonist, she's one of the better written ones. Not a completely weak Bella, but not a kick-butt Maximum Ride or Isabel Lightwood. She's different from everybody. A social nobody. An overprotected rich girl with a British accent. I guess anybody would expect her to be a pompous, stuck-up girl (It's the accent.), except for the fact that she has a dark past and is so shy she might as well be wallpaper. She's just the girl that plays violin. I loved the other characters, with the exception of, well, Haden. Yes, the handsome, dark, mysterious, dangerous boy. He is a jerk. That's really all you can say. And Theia falls in love with him. Can you say cliche again? No romance build up. Sure, Haden was creeping on Theia and fell in love with her (by creeping I mean watching from his castle in Hell). So I can understand that he likes her, if he's really into that. Theia, however, seems kind of brainless in the romance situation. That was the one aspect of her that I didn't like. The male character that I did kind of crush on was Gabe, a really sweet guy who doesn't have anything romantic with Theia. Also, Don and Ame were just the greatest people ever. They're hilarious, and really supportive best friends of Theia. I loved them. All of Theia's few friends (you can quite literally count them on one hand) were decent. I feel the need to rant about Haden again. And the romance, kind of. There were a couple of POVs from him, in which he kept thinking about Theia, but also kept reminding himself not to get too attached to Theia. One word: FAIL. Oh boy, he sure got attached to Theia. And he calls himself a demon? No wonder he left Hell to be a human. Too weak. Tsk, tsk. It'd make the story more interesting at least if he tried to avoid her. Blowing up the school in jealousy just does not count. The ending of the book almost completely redeemed the first section of the book. It was fast paced (super fast paced), and really interesting. I couldn't put it down. And it was mostly what made me like the entire book. However, I felt like the entire ending section was too interesting. As in, a-whole-nother-book material. But alas, we had to have a happy ending in the very first book. Gosh darn it, isn't this a trilogy? Or at least a series? You couldn't separate them because of some cruel twist of Fate in the first book? Put them back together later. (Look at what's happening in The Mortal Instruments.) But whatever. I kind of just spoiled it, so I'm sorry. Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and the ending, which gave me the lasting impression, was what gave me a really high rating. If you're not afraid of cliches, then this book might just be for you.
