I keep changing my mind on this one. Beautifully written, layered, interesting. Surreal, absurd, and haunting. I didn't always know what was going on, but I was able to trust that Nova Ren Suma would carry the reader through it. There were some very powerful scenes, so vivid and disturbing that I could barely bring myself to turn the page. At the same time, though, I felt a disconnect while reading--I simply couldn't identify with Chloe's devotion to her self-centered, manipulative sister, and this was difficult to get past for me, as a reader. Ruby's role as the controlling center of everything threw this story into frustrating territory for me, and while I appreciated that unbalance--the uncomfortable can be a valuable place for literature, after all--I wanted some resolution to that feeling. I wanted Chloe to grow in some way that would make her claim the center of her own story, and she did not. A worthwhile read, and I do think I'll look for more from this author.
