i'm really going to try to get through this book but let me tell you, it's a struggle. i really love the way the author writes and what i find fascinating is how reality and fantasy co-exist. the whole fantastical aspect is just there though. no explanation needed and it's written very matter of factly, in fact, all the characters accept it to be very matter of fact. quite interesting.... i find the most difficult thing to follow is keeping all the characters straight. not only are there so many of them, but half of them have very similar names. ugh, wish me luck getting through it.....

This is one of Steinbeck’s earlier works and takes place in California. (If you have read East of Eden it is the same scenery just a different era.) This novel deals with a man’s dream of finding his place in the world, his idea of God, and his relationship with the earth. This novel is written in a style very similar to Cormac McCarthy or I guess I should say that I can now see Steinbeck in Cormac McCarthy’s work. The way in which Steinbeck depicts God is beautiful and severe (Old Testament God mixed with paganism) and the ending is horrifyingly beautiful. The novel centers around a tree that the main character Joseph Waine embodies the dead spirit of his father in and I kept on getting the horrifying image of the tree in the ending of Child of God by McCarthy stuck in my mind throughout this novel. This is a short novel and should only take a couple of days to read but shows the diversity of our countries best novelist. Yes, I said our best. "People of Athens, I see that you are in every respect religiously exact. For as I walked about and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even came upon an altar inscribed, 'To a God Unknown.' Now what you thus worship unknowingly I would proclaim to you" (Acts 17:23).

I made the mistake of reading this book first....did not know that it was #5 in a series. I liked it so much that I'm planning to read books 1-4 as well as everything else written by this author. Ok, so I re-read this book, following the series order this time. I enjoyed it as much the second time. Of course, many things made more sense and fit together better because I read the first 4. :)
