A book I recommend but with caution. It's hard to read this and come out wholly unchanged at the other end of it -- asking a slew of uncomfortable questions about beliefs many of us have taken for granted since we were children. With regard to the scandal surrounding "Last Temptation" -- as far as I'm concerned, the introduction answers all accusations concisely and candidly, in terms of why he wrote it, what he was struggling with, and on what level (fiction!) we should approach it.

This book got off to a really slow start, but it's well written, and paints a highly descriptive picture of life in the early 20th century for recent immigrants and those living in poverty in large U.S. cities. The author's mostly autobiographical story makes that time and place come alive for the reader, and shows how a child's imagination can help her deal with poverty, a dysfunctional family, etc. The book presents the obstacles people face who have little education and little access to good education. It will inspire you to be sure that all children in our nation have access to good education, caring teachers, and a decent school environment. The book also celebrates resilience. It explores the love of parents for their children, and how you can really make a difference in someone's life when you take the time to show them you care. For example, the school janitor makes a difference in the lives of the poor children in the community simply by letting them know he cares about them. The mom in the book works hard day after day to make sure her children have food to eat and a place to live. She may have picked the wrong man to marry, but she sticks with him out of her love for him, and his love for their children.
