And from here, from the top of his day, he can see far ahead, before the descent begins. Sunday doesn't ring with the same promise and vigour as the day before." This book follows 24 hours in the life of a 48 year old neurosurgeon living and working in London, a Saturday. It takes you through his rising, his conversation with his son, his squash game, his shopping, his visit with his elderly mother, and an incident that will set off a climactic scene toward the end. It carries you through an emergency surgery, and finally back to bed. Saturday is much more than the details of his ordinary day. It is a metaphor for where he is in his life...not quite ready for retirement, yet not quite a young, vigorous surgeon or athlete any longer. It also represents where we sat in 2003 (post 9/11), poised for a war with Iraq. His ordinary day is a slice of life in a world where terrorism is a constant threat, where moral choices must be made in the prescence of dangerous men. I have to admit, I had prepared myself for this to be dull. I just felt like one day's worth of activities stretched out over several hours worth of reading would be a real snooze-fest. But, I was definetely engaged and interested throughout. I was searching for deeper meaning in the inner musings of the character as well as his activities and conflicts, and it was there, just like poetry. I enjoyed this book immensely. I think the writing was brilliant and multi-layered, I enjoyed the way the main character saw the world and how he thought through his decisions and interactions. What can I say? It made me envious of his life, his career, his intellect.
