Excellent mystery for older kids. Mrs. Bunny Starch is the biology teacher of Nick and Marta. She's a tough, mean, and very threatening teacher. On a school field trip to the Black Vine Swamp, a fire suddenly starts and Mrs. Starch never returns to the school bus. The school principal claims it's a "family emergency" but Nick and Marta know there is more to the story. Plot intertwines lots of different stories and characters, including another classmate called Smoke, who is the class delinquent and always fighting with Mrs. Starch. Then there's the Red Diamond Energy Corp, who is illegally pumping oil from the state's land. And there's Twilly, the mountain man, is out to expose Red Diamond. All the while, Twilly joined by Nick and Marta, have the task of protecting the swamp Panthers, who are endangered and have the threat of losing their home to Red Diamond. Multi-twisted plot. Excellent.
