Aşkolsun Kırlangıçlar
This first novel, written by, Khaled Hosseini, tells the story of a very young privileged and naïve boy. The boy had a friendship that was often looked down upon because of their cultures. In the Afghanistan culture, the Pashtuns are not expected to socialize with the Hazara’s because in the early years of their society, the Pashtuns captured the Hazara’s and forced them to be their servants. Through out the story we see the effort Amir puts into trying to obtain a healthy relationship with his father, often called Baba. This fiction book subconsciously throws the reader into a train of emotions based on the very poor decisions Amir has made throughout the story. In this story Amir is constantly haunted by his dreaded past from what he witnessed in an alleyway on the day of a kite tournament. Eventually he sets out to do something about it to ease his mind. The personal plot in the story is Amir and Hassan’s friendship. Hassan, the son of Amir’s father’s servant, is what keeps all the rising events tied together. Hosseini’s portrayal of the pre- revolutionary Afghanistan shows a great difference in the way most Afghan’s live. Hosseini depicts the country of Afghanistan as having most of the population in poverty, and very few that are wealthy enough to escape that poor lifestyle. The part of the population that is underprivileged normally sells body parts for money just to get by somewhat comfortably. Meanwhile, the very rich, live lavishly in huge houses that are in gated communities. Although Amir was raised by a very wealth father, not everything is as wonderful as it seems. Amir’s father is the prime example of all that a man should want to be: strong, courageous, dominant, generous and sometimes arrogant. Despite these characteristics he strongly disapproves of his son’s artistic desire to be a writer, yet he tolerates it. The approach of the novel changes in the last third of the book when Hosseini begins to go into the details of what is happening in Afghanistan after the Taliban takes over. In this part of the book we begin to see how drastically the country has changed. We find out that the Taliban has destroyed most of Afghanistan and forced many young boys into prostitution. In the end, Amir sets out to meet the “guy behind it all,” the Taliban leader, which turns out to be his childhood archenemy Assef. We begin to slowly see a change in Amir Character towards the end. He went from arrogant and uncaring in the being, to compassionate and determined.
