Amazing to discover how dreadful daily life can be for women who seek an education in Iran, pursued by guards checking to see if they have nail polish or lipstick, under constant threat of disgrace if not death! And such completely different sorts of women, some religious, some rebellious, some merely dying to escape, but all of whom dare to meet secretly because of their love of literature. The literary criticism in this book also inspired me to go back and read books like Lolita again! The current regime may be slightly more tolerant but I'm not sure... I would like to read an updated version of this tale.
