This is my favorite of the series. So much tension and suspense! It's strength comes from the characters more so than the storyline, which for me had some inconsistencies and weaknesses. Some events and situations were too convenient or simply overlooked. Edward has grown into his love for Bella and his own truth to the point where his maturity now complements his age. Edward's transformation sustains the idea that from uncertainty, difficulty comes peace and growth. The development of his character was intoxicating. Jacob's character also showed growth and depth. I'm hoping he follows Edward's ilk of transformation and finds his own. His dilemma between wolf protector and human gave me more sympathy for him. That said, his selfish manipulations to almost trap Bella out of her relationship with Edward frustrated me. Jacob still doesn't hold a candle to Edward, but I certainly appreciate him more. The problematic character remains Bella. To me she is vanilla, unconvincing, and lacks the depth that one would think could drive Edward so crazy. Every now and then there were sparkles of an out-of-the-ordinary catch. Am I to be convinced that merely her smell keeps Edward's intense interest? Or is it her mundaneness that has lured him? She continues to whine about all the things that Edward won't do for her and refuses to open her eyes to his efforts and love. Although her character may reflect her age realistically. Hopefully, with Ms. Meyer's continued support for the series, Bella will follow Edward's and Jacob's tumult and transformations, which is what people do as they grow out of adolescence - a case for her waiting another year or two to become a vampire. I eagerly await book number four!
