Great book, but more so for the twisted ending than anything else. Her usual "leave that slightly uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty" with a twist...

Don't pick this up expecting to find any role models. It's populated with people that aren't even vile enough to detest: They're merely self-absorbed and petty. Flaubert's distaste for people at large reeks from these pages, and it's a powerful tale about human bondage. We do it to ourselves. The art that went into constructing this novel is amazing, and the way in which Mdm. Bovary allows her life to spiral out of control is agonizingly realistic.

Hmmm..Denis Thatcher smoking in the Ladies' (spouses?) reception room, or some other place where the peers' or peeresses spouses mingle... There is fire in this collection of letters... ---- 13th May the end is nigh, I'm on page 668, and only last week one Mosley died young (Diana's grandson Alexander). As I have read, on a Cyprus holiday, parallel to this book another family saga, Anna Freud's life, the question remains: how you survive in circumstances that are both luxurious/upper class/intellectually privileged AND filled with the tumultuous 20th century politics and social change. Freuds had six children, die grosse und die kleine, Mitfords 7, about the same age range 17-20 years. Anna seems to have been the lucky one, like Deborah: the littlest, but in the end, the most important (to father/to other sisters/to family cohesion). And the birth of these youngest had been a disappointment, Anna unwanted "superfluous", Deborah not a boy. Yeah, and the Jewish Freuds nearly destroyed in WW2 holocaust (Anna refused to accept any German grants and did not visit Austria until forced). Unity saying she hates all Jews...Diana opposing Rhodesia's black power.
