First read was 3/2011, second read (audio) 7/2013. A truly remarkable book each time.
We listened to this on CD on spring break and it was good enough that we all wanted to hear the end. The plot involves a missing biology teacher, a juvenile arsonist, an Iraq war vet, and Florida panthers. The young teen main character is believeable but some of the other characters are pretty far fetched. It's an environmental tale with Edward Abby's "Monkey Wrench Gang" making an appearance and the bad guys are from an oil company.
An introduction to the Snopes family and a heck of a book. I wouldn't reccomend it if one hasn't had any experiance with Faulkner, though. Maybe start on As I Lay Dying or Light in August or Intruder in the Dust. If one is familier with Faulkner (as familier as Faulkner allows one to get) I would say go for it. The first quarter of the book is genuinely funny, which is something I would generally not classify Mr. Faulkner as. In fact, "funny" is probably the third to last thing I would classify him, right before "laconic" and "simplistic". In any case, this is a great one.
