Behind the tight, unemotional, Victorian stricture of Pride & Prejudice is a dryly hilarious lampoon of every societal stereotype of the time period and a warm, transporting romance between a headstrong woman and a pompous man, and between a sweetly naive woman and a sweetly naive man. With each re-read, it grows more intensely amusing, more perfectly aimed, more aptly said. Who couldn't want to be like Elizabeth, and who couldn't want to be with a man like Darcy? I blame P&P for drawing Mr Darcy in such an agreeable light that every woman in this century wants a man who is publicly a disagreeable challenge and privately a loving, generous spirit. Too bad only one of them exists, and that's on these pages. If you're having trouble getting past the flatness that some people encounter in Austen's novels, pair it with the BBC miniseries and the voices suddenly jump through the page.
