** spoiler alert ** Susan Hill is the new Ruth Rendell with complete with creepy English villages and deep, hidden motives. That being said, the book could have done without the unrequited love story as I felt it took away from the tension.

Love Alex Garland, love this novel. Grimy. Suspenseful. It's too bad the film adaptation didn't make use of Ewan McGregor, who wanted to play the lead but was denied by Danny Boyle. Boo-hiss!
