Though he has written many other outstanding stories, "Ugly Chickens" remains a classic.

Keith has certainly packed in a lot of life. The early days are far and away the best and richest seam in the book. The evocation of dismal post-war Britain is strong and some great stories of his family and school days. Although the auto-biog is co-written I did feel that I was hearing Keith's voice narrating events. I didn't enjoy reading about the druggie/heroin years so much, even though Exile on Main Street came out of that time. They were dangerous times emotionally and physically yet his son Marlon accompanied him on tour during this time, and although he got a grip on his own life I felt sorry for him. It was not a usual childhood, and not really in a positive way. I really enjoyed the stories from other major players which appear in their own words. It was a definite plus to the recounting of a full life. Overall Keith's love of music, all sorts of music, and his talent are clearly demonstrated. Now I am off to listen to Exile... in full!
