Like other Nick Hornby books, Juliet, Naked is funny, touching and wise. It features his usual mix of relationships, music, quirky characters, and a dry British humor that had me laughing out loud at points. In this one, 40ish Annie has been living with Duncan for 15 years, putting up with his ongoing obsession with erstwhile American rock star Tucker Crowe, who 20 years ago suddenly walked away from his career and dropped out of sight. His out-of-the-mainstream fame is kept alive by Duncan and his fellow cybernerds. When Crowe's record company releases a demo ("naked") version of his only hit album, Juliet, a series of online reviews and impulsive emails nudges Duncan, Annie, and Tucker onto new paths that explore love, fandom, parenthood, internet folly, self-image, and the meaning of art. Secrets are stripped away until, like Crowe's album, the characters' songs are played with out any reverb masking the melody.
