A historical epic that is a must read to understand the nature of slavery in the US. It's a first hand account of how Frederick Douglass was a born a slave, became self-educated, teaching himself and fellow slaves to read and write, and how he escaped to the North and became a free man fighting for abolition. I would have like to have read more details about his life, but he had to omit certain details for the sake of the safety of those who aided him.
