it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. we were supposed to read it for a communications class and thought it would be really bad and boring. i read it in a night and is actually a good book.
The first time I read this book only the first part when Stephen was in Clongowes held my interest; the rest of the book made little to no sense to me. However, even then I felt something. It turns out I just wasn't giving it the time it deserved. I have since read this book four more times, and I will read it again. It's brilliance goes well beyond the first part. This book is worth studying in detail, page by page, just to figure out how it works let alone to absorb a fascinating coming of age story. Joyce was a supreme stylist. His prose is tight and the form perfectly fits the feel he creates for the reader. Not only that, but the whole book perfectly fulfills Stephen's aesthetic theory. While I admit that it is a very difficult book, it merits the reader's hard work.
