I loved this book at first but towards the end I just felt like it was too long. This has lots of thinly veiled political commentary. I really liked the twist on the Wizard of Oz story.
Great record of an urban farmer's year raising her animals in Oakland, CA. She records the challenges and humorous events that occur as she tries to live sustainably from the vacant lot next to her ghetto apartment building amidst drive by shootings, the threat of new condos bulldozing her garden, and neighbors who freely pilfer her extra produce. She feeds her pigs by dumpster diving behind restaurants and tries to keep her poultry safe from the guard dogs next door. Eventually she befriends a gourmet chef who teaches her how to prepare heavenly dishes from her backyard barnyard. She has a funny story and a great writing style. She eloquently describes the challenges and humor of growing your own food in an urban setting. I'd love to be her in another life!
