Which I was when I read this in Ms Holley's Western Literature class- It's very interesting and will spark conversation/ ideas etc...
The second volume of the Elric chronicles contains less of the canonical Elric stories and more tangental "fluff," in my opinion, but still an excellent book for the sword-and-sorcery fan.
I'm not normally a fan of 20th (or, I guess now 21st) century literature. Something about this drew me in, though -- I'm not sure if it was just the pretty cover or the idea of explicitly (as I thought) addressing 9/11 in fiction form. As it turns out, the book *doesn't* address that day outright; the vast majority of the book is set in 1974, when Philippe Petit walked a tightrope strung between the Twin Towers. The book ends up mainly using the event as a pivot, a central point around which its characters loosely spin and connect, and although I usually like short stories even less than young novels, I found myself being drawn into the 1970s New York created here. The characters are beautifully flawed and interesting, and while the connections among them could feel contrived, they instead have the sense of a dense network of actual overlapping lives. I loved the book.
