Check out my published review of Killough's Beloved Idea in Sentence: A Journal of Prose Poetics,Spring 09, #6. "Ann Killough's Beloved Idea is like a costumpe party for the investigation of national conceptions and convictions. We slip the metaphor on--be it 'underpants,' 'exile,' or the 'horsemen." We zip it up or pull it over our heads, move around in it, imagine ourselves as that figure or in that configuration, and become part of the speaker's analysis of her concerns for and about 'the nation'" (Graham 273).
it is great touching, a must read>>>>> We all need to learn about life and death.... very sad..but true.
Awesome -- the best of James' books, or at least he (and I) thought so. Dense and subtle, sometimes difficultly so, the book keeps you right in the point of view of the simple American as he becomes seduced by naughty old Europe. Devastating in the end, which is kind of amazing, given how old-fashioned and quaint the main concerns seem today.
