The massacre at Columbine High School in 1999 is one of those moments in history that many of us look back on and remember exactly where we were when we first heard about the horrible events. Taking place at a time when cell phones were on the cusp of their ubiquity, the events were reported by eyewitnesses and students long before police made it into the building. This was the beginning of a hailstorm of rumors and conflicting reports amidst the deluge of media coverage that persisted for months, even years. But before now there hasn’t been a single comprehensive report that encompasses the events of that day and the time leading up to them, the aftermath of the violence, and the bevy of rumors that took hold and became fact in many minds across the country. I was hesitant to delve into a book that revisits in such great detail the minds of killers, the horrific events of the day, and the tragedy it brought to so many lives—but I couldn’t put it down. Dave Cullen has done a fantastic job narrating the topic of Columbine, and applies a great deal of care and well-researched accountability to the story. This book is for you if you are enjoy reading true crime, of if you are curious about how the media obtains, communicates & fuels their stories. This is a compelling and fascinating read on so many levels—not the least of which is the fact that even if you paid attention to the news coverage 10 years ago, you will definitely learn new things, and probably have some previously-held beliefs dispelled.
