I've read this before. I don't know how I missed marking it here on Goodreads.

This is the such the "dick lit" book. When I close my eyes and picture the phrase "dick lit" this is the book I imagine. It's well written marginally interesting story. The vivid descriptions of endometriosis were a bit much, and I can never look at chocolate chip the same way again. Anyway, it's a funny book but with a darkness that seems a bit cliched. Still, it's a quick read and it'll make you crave good "dick lit".

Nicholas Sparks takes a turn from his usual, sometimes sappy romance stories in The Guardian: still a romance, this book has a definitive thriller edge to it. I enjoyed The Guardian and think Sparks accomplished his objectives of mixing a romance with a thriller without losing sight of the relationship that was building throughout the novel. When Julie's husband dies in his early 20s, he leaves Julie with a note and a Great Dane puppy, who she names Singer, to look after her. Four years after becoming a young widow, Julie is ready to start making good on her late husband's wish that she find someone who makes her happy. She dates a few losers, gets romanced by some seemingly charming guys, and eventually falls in love with Mike, the man who was her husband's best friend. As their romance grows, they soon realize they are fighting for their lives against a violent stalker who is dead-set on having Julie for himself. True throughout to his guardian duties, Singer is the shining star of this novel. More human than dog, he is the only one who seems to know what's going on the whole time. I haven't read many Sparks novels, but I hear this one breaks form quite a bit. For that, I say kudos to Sparks! Job well done.

When coffee shop employee Annabelle falls down a flight of stairs at work one night and becomes comatose, the police think that it was probably an accident. But shop manager Clare thinks that Annabelle was pushed and begins looking for suspects. Annabelle knew quite a few people who would gain from her death- jealous rivals and a wealthy boyfriend who may not want a poor girlfriend anymore. I expected this to be a fluff mystery, but though the crime takes place on the first pages, it doesn't become the focus of the story until nearly 100 pages in. Instead, so much is about Clare's problems with her ex-husband and her adoration of Madame, owner of the coffee shop. And yes, lots of coffee talk: how to make different coffee drinks, how to mess up coffee, how to store it, etc. Not a surprise in a book that is set in a coffee shop, but it really is non-stop preparation and consumption of coffee. My other problem was why a coffee shop manager would investigate what turns out to be a very serious crime. The police are there and Clare has no experience in law, yet from the very beginning she is interviewing suspects. Someone else may find this book charming, but I found it too out there to continue with this series.
