An extremely in-depth chronicle of the history of McCarthyism in 20th century America. Sometimes difficult to read because of the enormous amount of information it includes, but worth it because of how timely the problem of McCarthyism is to today's state of (fear) and affairs in 21st century America. McCarthyism absolutely fascinates me, and this work does an excellent job of capturing both the details and the fear from that era splendidly. Morgan also creates vivid, often deservedly villainous descriptions of some of the major players in McCarthyism (notably McCarthy himself and attorney Roy Cohn). This will take some time to read, but it's well worth it in my opinion, as the Red Scare was one of the most blatant abuses of civil liberties in US history (much like the state of things today...hmmm...).

My expectations were pretty low before I started this book, because the cover and abstract looked and sounded like the typical urban fantasy book off the rack. However, while reading it I found out that - despite my misgivings - it's not as bad as I imagined it to be, and although there is a prerequisite sex scene in the beginning of the story I still started to be intrigued by the mix of crime story and dark fantasy and enjoyed this book. The reason: the author had worked with the police, the crime investigation and even worked in a morgue and one can feel the expertise and the effort Diana Rowland took in writing the storyline. Conversely, the demonologic concept was kind of fague and hazy depicted and I thought that the author could have spent more time constructing this demonic realm and it's inhabitants as well as Kara Gillian's arcane education.
