I think I prefer the Lord John novels that do not involve James Fraser. Don't get me wrong I love Jamie Fraser and his interesting life/adventures but he has his own (long and drawn out) series to unravel his drama in! I enjoy the Lord John series for it's mystery/intrigue story lines and 18th century social complexities. Not to mention they are shorter and more to the point than the Outlander series. I'm not sure if it is just me but I felt the Fraser in this story didn't quite match up to the one I already knew. Maybe it's because he never had a strong individual voice in the Outlander series so I'm unfamiliar with it. Overall I enjoyed the main story line despite a few bits that dragged on more than necessary.
