Probably the only dating book I've found to recommend to someone in the Christian community. Good general principles about how to be respectful as, first and foremost, a member of the body of Christ amidst the tumultuous dating process.

Ziegelman takes on too much in this interesting mess. Her nominal focus is a specific NYC tenement building and five families of different ethnic backgrounds (German, Irish, Russian and German Jews, and Italian) who lived there at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. This structure was undercut by the lack of specific information known about these people, though there is a little bit more detail about the last two families. However, her extrapolations about their lives give some sense of the immigrant experience and how food was a means of keeping ethnic identity as well as assimilating, and there are some specific anecdotes and a wealth of recipes and quotations that help delineate the different cultures. I would’ve been interested in knowing more about the shift from one group to another as waves of immigrants came to America, a topic that she only lightly touches on.
