That sentence just doesn't fit with the rest of the writing, the smooth flow of the book comes to a screeching halt right there. And then there's another little bump, "Riding the fox like a bucking bronco..." In and of themselves I don't have a problem with either sentence but they are so out of sync with the rest of the story that it's like hitting a stop sign.
