I savor Sue Miller's writing because its raw. Although I am not pleased by her endings, her character choices and reasoning stay with me for extended periods of time. Not only did I enjoy the juxtapose in the two women's life's stories but on how Sue Miller is able to accurately identify with the questions and insecurities that these life moments provide. Although this section has little relativity to the overall plot, it made me think about how little I know about my parents, grandparents etc. We also do not discuss the emotional histories and the reasoning and that tracked decisions throughout each other's lives. Will I share those emotions with my children? Will I remember the emotional paths that led me here? Will my children be just as impatient as I am with my parents when sharing? "It's all Oedipal in the end, isn't it? ....That the study of history is Oedipal at its roots? Connected directly to the Oedipus complex?...doesn't it all strat--our interest in the past with our wanting to know more about own own parents? ...that drive we all have to get to the root of thier attraction to each other. We always want thier story, don't we? It's the first history we're really curious about. And the last one. It hanuts us. Because it's a hisotry with the most important consequence in the world---us. Us and our story, out history." p 68
