I am usually a fan of simple, unpretentious writing. However the simplicity in this novel managed to be both dull and pretentious at the same time. The animal characters were endearing and some of their conversations were nicely written, however, they remained the book's only shining light amongst pointlessly bleak and vapid writing. A writer writing about a writer is lazy, as was a lot about the book. You left it feeling as if it was still in the drafting stage but nobody could be bothered fixing it up because it would sell anyway, riding on the author's credentials. The characters and plot were shallow and unengaging, and much of the padding was either plain boring or an attempt to add mystery that served only to alienate the reader. While it did build to an obligatory climax, the ending was unsurprising and uninspiring. Mercilessly, it was short. As an aside, I couldn't help noting that all his complimentary analysis of his own writing, his involved mentioning of all his fan mail etc reeked of arrogance.
