This book takes a while to get into; the beginning chapters sound forced, even though they do provide good information. The mid to late chapters really capture Russert's character. He was from Buffalo, like me, and I truly miss his presence on Meet the Press and in journalism in general.
fascinating study of the birth of consumer culture in france. so much has been done with consumer culture in america, but little has focused on the continent. tiersten writes in clear, lucid, accessible prose. her thesis is indisputible the way she presents it, and it will certainly be one of the classics in gender history. there are also many illustrations which help the book along, and is all around enjoyable while being "real" history. (the author is also an incredible lecturer, who doesn't assign her own writings as homework. just in case you think i might be biased.)
Really a fabulous read, especially for those who aren't scientifically inclined but would like to know more about science, etc. The book is about how it's happened that we as a species continue to have certain diseases when theoretically they should have been bred out of us. It talks about how certain diseases actually developed because they were useful at a time. It then does some stuff about genetics, micro organisms, etc. Super book and I learned a ton.
