Goolrick’s novel is making quite the literary splash (Columbia Pictures has already bought the rights), and I did really enjoy it. Compelling characters. Gothic suspense. Sumptuous, but finely tuned prose. A wealthy but lonely widower. A “simple honest woman” who’s not what she seems. But the core of the book was wrapped around an overwrought erotic sexual obsession and frustration, which is where the book slipped a bit (for me). That focus is what gives the story its dark, steely edge and it works. For a while. But by the ¾ mark that erotic tension began to feel fatigued. Nonetheless, it wasn’t so fatigued that I didn’t finish the book in a day and a half, despite being sick. Goolrick knows how to craft atmosphere, and reading this book was a sensual, cinematic experience.
Le coeur serré et une larme en coin d'oeil. Magnifique.
