this is an awesome first novel by a young british writer. overall, it is about the current state of culture in England. specifically, it traces the lives of 3 families over a number of years and how their lives intertwine. it raises questions of religion versus science and tradition versus society. zadie smith writes incredibly down-to-earth using very intellectual and biting narration. white teeth is about the roots that all of us have planted and the struggle with accepting them.
