This story focuses on the author's husband, Jerry, an attorney, who served a two year sentence for a white collar crime. I found Jerry to be extremely naive and trusting. Although I did have sympathy for Gene, I thought she pushed the "poor me, feel sorry for me" button a few too many times and never wrote of any remorse for that behavior. Without giving too much away, the end of the book is extremely sad.
The Sorcerer's Stone is a sort of crappy book, really. It's a childhood wish fulfillment fantasy, but without any real fulfillment. Yes, Harry's special, but he's also an instantly spoiled brat, whose teachers allow him to get away with anything, because he's so special. I don't mind suspension of disbelief. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy geek of old. However, who would allow their children to attend a school where there were random death traps strewn about? What moron decided that it would be a good idea to hide something that would attract the most nefarious, insidious and dangerous evil supernatural entity this side of Lucifer in a school? By Apollo's Unwashed Loincloth, not even Professor Charles Xavier put his students in that kind of danger! And please, I'm low on medication, don't get me started on Quidditch. Give me fantasy, fine, but don't make your world internally inconsistent and expect me to be thrilled. Until Rowling and figure out the rules of her world well enough to make the characters act in a consistent and logical manner, I'll get my children's book fix from the Doctor (Seuss, not Who) and Lemony Snickett.
