Kind of a beast of a book but readable in chunks. I'm not sure I'm smart enough to read this guy's work.

I had a hard time getting into this book. During the first chapter, I found Alex and her friends to be slightly overdone and a little annoying. They were the typical "I'm above the era I live in" type of girls that you find in a lot of these books. I typically enjoy that kind of high-spirited girl, but in this book it almost seemed a little forced. Infact, I put this book down and read several others before finishing it. That being said, with the addition of the comedic brothers and the charming Gavin, the story seemed to improve. Alex became a little more "real" as she developed and explored her feelings for Gavin. I loved the friendly banter between Alex and her brothers. This is not much of a mystery, so don't read it if you are looking for a "regency mystery." It's more about Alex and her developing feelings. It was cute at times and I got hooked reading. Worth reading if you like the era. The characters had distinct personalities, if a trifle cliche. Mostly, though, it was an enjoyable book.

Obviously this story was meant to be a tear jerker. Even though I knew I was being manipulated by the author I still cried.
