I really liked this book. I read this for an LDS book club and was surprised by the choice. However, this told a different side to Charles Darwin what a great man he was and I enjoyed reading his and Emma's love story. Very touching!

I was confused by the ending to this series. I found it a little difficult to get through; could be because I was travelling at the time and mostly distracted. I found the allegories and metaphors just all too much to bare in the end and it got way too heavy for a children's series. I will have to read the whole lot again to really make a final decision. Mostly I was surprised by Pullman's very obvious and damning ideas about certain organized religions. Also the romance of the children was very off in my point of view. Lyra went from a little innocent girl to a sexual being frolicking in the woods too soon. Maybe I just missed something but the transition of time wasn't successfully conveyed to me. I'd have to read the series again to make sense of it all, so watch this space!
