With this book Bernard Cornwell starts off another great series. This is the story of Uhtred. He is a Saxon whose kingdom has been taken away from him by his uncle. Raised by the Vikings he must choose, does he fight for Alfred the great and the Saxons, or does he join the Danes who raised him? This is the story of the making of England, and how Alfred became known as “The Great” (the only English king with this title). This is a great adventure story. As with all of Mr. Cornwell’s books, while the main character is fictional the events that surround him are true. Any liberties that Mr. Cornwell takes with historical truth he annotates and corrects at the back of the book.
