Dorothy Allison takes my breath away. Her other books, Cavedweller and Two of Three Things I know for Sure, are as gripping. One of my high school students never returned Bastard Out of Carolina, but I don't begrudge her. It's powerful--and hard to read.
The book covered many topics related to modern day slavery, especially focusing on the sex industry, children soldiers, and bonded laborers. It does a good job informing how much of a problem there is today, as well as a good job stating what is being done about it. I am disappointed that the book offers very little practical advice on what I can do to help personally. The book basically ends with a call to donate my time, talent and money to an organization that is working to stop slavery. There are no agencies in my area that I can volunteer at; I have no specialized skills that I can use to change anything; the only thing it leaves is finding an organization to support financially.
this was a well-written book...made me think
