A Clockwork Orange is an exercise of style over substance. In terms of its plot, characters, and themes, this is pretty ordinary dystopia stuff, with little to distinguish it. What does distinguish this book, however, is that Burgess writes entirely in an invented slang, Nadsat, a combination of cockney, Russian, and other languages, and that gives the novel a realism that it's otherwise lacking. The style of this book alone is what makes it remarkable, and trudging through it makes you feel like an anthropologist on another planet.
