A teenage boy escalates a fight with 2 bullies till he shoots them down as they come in his room one night. Rather than get a guilty verdict, he goes on the run. His younger brother (the narrator) and sister, with the dad, go looking for him after the father loses his job as a janitor because of the fall out from the murder. they don't get far and end up staying with Roxane in the winter. Dad falls in love with Roxane, they marry and head back home. The fugitive had been living with a crazy outlaw and a girl the outlaw trained up to be his wife. The fugitive takes her away from the evil man, so the even man goes looking for them. The tracks them to the home, kills the father and nearly kills the young brother. The narrator ends up with the girl, while the older brother stays on the run his whole life. It was an okay story. I'm not quite sure why I didn't love it.
