I finally got around to reading this. I loved Steinbeck's use of language; there were many morsels that I stopped to savor. It reads like a walk down memory lane with someone who lived it and has had time to refine and polish the stories. I enjoyed it but despite the parts I found so compelling and beautiful, I didn't love it. Somehow, for that, it was slightly disappointing.

Cricket is a classic story of friendship without being sappy, preachy, or moralistic. It also is a great tale of dealing with hard times and finding out what's really important. Recommended ages: as a read-aloud, age 5-10
