Memoir before there was memoir. You want to write a car crash, read Agee's scene first.
Dennis Lehane has become one of my favorite writers. I saw this movie several years ago. I wish I had read the book first because I knew the plot. But it was worth reading it simply for Lehane's writing. He doesn't load on the exposition at the beginning. You find out more to every story as the book progresses through dialogue. I love his dialogue! It's so natural. The movie was cast perfectly, in my opinion. The book,of course, gives you more insight into the three main characters thoughts. The movie is one of the few exceptions that doesn't massacre the book. It was a solid adaptation. Jimmy Marcus, Sean Devine, and Jimmy Boyle are tied together by two events: Dave's kidnapping and Jimmy's daughter Katie's murder. Each of the characters are affected by both these events and at least one event brings about a remarkable change in each character. I also like how the characters have both a good and bad side. The lines become blurred as the book progresses. Excellent book!
I love this series. It's creative. It's interesting. Tj brought home volume 11. Which I read immediately. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the previous ones. So...of course, I'm going back through and reading them all over again. Brilliant.
