I liked this more than I thought I would. It's definitely a page-turner, and the author says herself that she privileges a good story over beautiful language. But I like beautiful language too much not to feel its lack quite sorely. I guess I don't understand why Sittenfeld chose a retrospective narrator but then none of the benefits associated with a retrospective narrator (hindsight, more sophisticated language).
