This woman can write! Her first chapter is everything the first chapter of a biography should be--intriguing, funny, informative, with turns of phrase that make you sit up and take notice (in a good way). The content in this case is a little more problematical. Because we know so little about Cleopatra, and because all of what we do know is from unreliable sources, pretty much everything in the book is at least somewhat speculative. Also, if feels a little bit padded--a lot of back story about Caesar and Antony, a lot of info about Roman culture and Alexandria. On the other hand, that information was interesting too, at least to me. So if I had rated this after the first chapter, I would have given it 5 stars, but on balance I'm going to knock it down to 4. I'll be interested to read some of her other work where there's more information available. I'm expecting great things!
