Beautifully written but terrible ending.

challenging :-)

why do i love this book so damn much? cannot account for it, since i am usually pretty bored by realism. but gissing's pessimism is the perfect antidote to victorian sentimentality. and even though this could almost be a nonfiction history of vict. publishing and authorship, the story is compulsively readable.
