A nice, old fashioned mystery with Adam Dalgliesh. It looks like a goodbye to the series; the writer did reach the age of 88, so it is quite an acomplishment of hers!

more like 2.5 stars but i'll give up the other half since i'm easy like that. very promising -- i liked the mirroring between times but i was disappointed in the end. seemed like a cop-out or something... too easy.

An older Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus novel form before Peter and Rina get married. Peter discovers a toddler wandering alone at night and most of the book is taken up with finding her parents and then solving the murders of four of the family members. At the same time Peter is trying to help out an old war buddy who is suspected in attacking a hooker and he and Peter have their confrontations as they work out old memories from their time in Viet Nam and Peter has to come to grips with his own bouts of anger brought on by his experiences in the conflict. Good read, I like Fay’s books.

This is a simply spellbinding child's tale that I will always cherish and read to my own children! In fact, this only cemented the thought that I would like to name my daughter Coraline. I've never been content with the simple happy-ending fairy tales that most of the world holds beloved. The darker the twists, the greater the peril, the more thrilling the reward. Everyone should read this and have it in their collection.
