The Golden Compass is a marvelously imaginative book, which comfortably straddles the line between Steampunk and Fantasy. Pullman creates a rich, nuanced alternate universe and an engaging plot. Many literary and non-literary stereotypes are turned delightfully on their heads or at least derailed. Pullman's writing style, however, produces a distinct feeling of being continually moralized at; as if the story were being told by an acerbic Anglican Vicar who has a stick up his arse. All in all a good read, for people who can enjoy the crisp Steampunk crust and creamy Fantasy filling while ignoring the uncomfortably astringent tone Pullman provides us to wash it down with. Here's hoping they do better with the upcoming movie.

Well, I was really looking forward to this book. I read Chevy Stevens first book and absolutely loved it. Anytime I can't figure out what is going to happen in a story I really enjoy it. Unfortunately I can't say that about this book. It was OK, but I wouldn't recommend it. Prior to reading this book I read several reviews that said there was a lot of implausible events. After reading the book I agree 100%. Some of the things that happened were so implausible that it took away for the enjoyment of reading the story. This book reminds me of what sometimes happens to musical artists who have a great first album. They rush to put out the next one but it is not very good. It seems rushed and not completely baked. That's how this book was for me. The whole scenario with her birth mother and father felt too contrived. That's not to say a birth mother would not want to meet the child she put up for adoption but it was just too convenient. I wanted to love this book as much as I loved the first book, Still Missing, but I couldn't. Never Knowing felt like a rewrite of Still Missing with the names were changed.
