Overall I think Grossman did a better job of creating magic with The Magicians, the prequel to this novel. Maybe it's because the first book pays homage to Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia and this book, while nodding to those books, reaches out into other literary depths where the magic, both literal and metaphorical, is of a different kind.
