This book is funny. Fannie Flagg is a great writer. Although... I think the two main characters are "partners" in the book, but the movie didn't portray it that way.
The story surrounds a lynching that occurred and moves forward and backward in time telling the stories of various tribe members and others. The families are very interconnected. Most pieces are told by Evelina (Mooshum's granddaughter) or the Judge (married to Geraldine). Also Marn's section on the Kindren and Billy Peace - very interesting! Other important characters are: Joseph, Mooshum's brother, Holy Track, those on the town planning expedition, Corwin Peace, etc... Themes: Generational life and love, what we pass on, telling stories, importance of our history, white vs. Indian relations, love I didn't like this piece as much as "The Master Butcher's Singing Club" though it was still wonderful. The themes were just as interesting, especially the hanging that was central to everyone's history. However, I didn't feel that everything was woven together here quite as well. I did like seeing so many different perspectives and figuring out how people were related to each other and affected each other.
