This is a study of Simon Bolivar, who's widely acclaimed as the great liberator of South America. Rather than an amalgamation of dates and battles, this is Marquez trying to humanize the hero during the last days of his life. There's a hint of the magical realism that's standard to Marquez's writing, but it's subdued: Here's a man watching his entire life's work collapse while he shuffles along from place to place, wondering which refuge on the path to exile will become his death bed.
