Spoiler I stayed away from this book all last year because of it creepy context: a 19 year old girl is kidnapped by a madman and lives the next seven years of her life in an 11 x11 foot room with her 5 year old son who is the product of rape by her kidnapper. I finally broke down and read it because it was rated as one of the top 10 books of the 2010. Once you get over the claustrophobic first few chapters, after the mom and son escape their prison, it becomes a very good read. One learns through the boy’s eyes a whole new concept of the meaning of freedom. His character makes you re-think, well, just about everything. Even with the horror of the body of the story you can’t help but smile and fall in love with the little boy.
