One of my all time favorite books!
Was a very interesting book that took you back to the 'Haight/Ashbury' days of the Merry Pranksters and the Hell's Angels. An interesting story about hippies.
I think the book is more about the world explaining soccer than soccer explaining the world. It's a collection of essays on how the game is (not surprisingly) deeply intertwined with the political and socioeconomic conditions of its surrounding. You learn a lot of interesting details about the game, the teams, and the political/historical situation of the country. However, except for one chapter on Iran, the book is limited to Europe and the Americas. Also, the author readily admits that he's a liberal yuppie, and thus, beware that you're watching the world through the eyes of a typical yuppie liberal American and his cherished assumptions and biases.
